Morse Code Translator
Text to dots and dashes, and back.
About Morse Code Translator
A Morse code translator that converts text to dots and dashes or Morse back to text as you type, and plays the result as a 600 Hz tone in your browser.
How to use
- Choose Text → Morse or Morse → Text.
- Type or paste into the left pane. The translation appears on the right as you type, with a Copy button.
- Press Play on the result to hear it, or Stop to cut it short. Playback is a 600 Hz sidetone with an 80 ms dot, a 240 ms dash, 3 units between letters and 7 between words, the standard proportions.
What it supports
- Letters A–Z (case is ignored; decoded text is uppercase), digits 0–9, and the punctuation
. , ? ' ! / ( ) & : ; = + - _ " $ @from the International Morse Code table (ITU-R M.1677). - Morse output uses a single space between letters and
/between words. - When translating text, accented letters lose their accent (
É→E); any other character without a Morse equivalent (emoji,%,#) is skipped silently. - When translating Morse, the input may contain
.,-, spaces and/._and−count as dashes,|as/, and three or more spaces as a word gap. An unknown sequence such as.-.-.-.-stops the translation with an error naming it. - Not supported: prosigns such as SOS written as one run (
...---...without spaces), the extra codes of national variants (ÄandÑare folded toAandN), or adjusting the playback speed.
Example
Hello world
→ .... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..

Frequently asked questions
- What is SOS in Morse code?
- SOS is ... --- ... (three dots, three dashes, three dots). It was chosen in 1906 because the pattern is easy to send and recognise, not as an abbreviation; the phrases "save our souls" and "save our ship" came later.
- How are letters and words separated in Morse code?
- Timing. A dot is one unit, a dash is three, the gap inside a letter is one unit, the gap between letters is three units and the gap between words is seven. In writing, a space separates letters and a slash separates words.
- Why does my Morse code not decode?
- Usually because of a sequence that is not in the table, missing spaces between letters, or characters other than dots, dashes, spaces and slashes. Check that each letter is separated by a single space and each word by a slash or three spaces.
- What is the difference between a dot and a dash in Morse code?
- Only duration. A dash is held three times as long as a dot; in this tool that is 240 ms against 80 ms. The letter E is a single dot and T is a single dash, the two most common letters in English given the two shortest codes.
